Holy smokes. I blinked, and November was here. And driving past Auditorium Shores, I could see the stages being built. The Fun Fun Fun Fest buzz is in full throttle.

Yet I, your Austin Music Minute raven maven Laurie Gallardo, am quite aware that it hasn’t started just yet, technically speaking. The indie music festival, now celebrating six years of bringing all genres of independent music, DJ acts and comedy to the Live Music Capital of the World, officially kicks off Friday. However, in a way, it already has started – with some fabulous Fun Fun Fun Nites. These are shows scheduled tonight through this weekend at venues including The Mohawk, Beerland, Red 7, the Beauty Bar, the ND at 501 Studios and – a little something extra in a unique atmosphere – DJ sets at Empire Automotive. The triple-Fun Nites will continue throughout the weekend as afterparty shows following the daytime festival activities. More music than you can shake some earplugs at.

I’ve got a few recommendations for you, if I may be so bold:

Tonight, I’m excited about Sleepercar, featuring songwriter (and my El Paso, TX homeboy) Jim Ward of Sparta and At the Drive-In. He and his band will do a show this evening at the ND, located at 5th and Brushy, not too far from Progress Coffee. The line up includes Jesse Malin (D Generation), Cowboy and Indian, and Lights Go Out. Doors open at 9 p.m. Also tonight, my fantastic Learning Secrets peeps are sharing DJ duties with members of Passion Pit at Empire Automotive, 604 E. 7th St. Doors open at 9:30 p.m.

Friday night, I’m looking forward to catching Dead Confederate at Club DeVille, 900 Red River. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. And there’s a great line-up at The Parish, 214 E. 6th St., with The Thermals, Lemuria, Ume (just to be clear, frontwoman Lauren Larson is my rock ‘n’ roll hero, okay?), and Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! star David Liebe Hart. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. Plus, there’s a special place in my heart for Broken Gold, who’ll be playing at Beerland, 711 Red River, along with Cobra Skulls, Nothington, and The Anchor. Doors open at 9:30 p.m.

Saturday night, I highly recommend catching DJ Thibault spinning and weaving his own original grooves at the ND. Doors open at 10 p.m. And The Felice Brothers will play at The Mohawk, 912 Red River. Doors open at9 p.m.

Sunday night’s fest wrap-up includes a gig with Royal Bangs at Red 7, 611 E. 7th St. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. And one of my favorites, Thee Oh Sees, play at Beerland. Doors open at 9:30 p.m.

So much to put on your schedule. Don’t you just love that? Enjoy all the great music.
