Less than two months remain until the first voting of the 2012 primary season in Iowa. It’s make or break time for the eight major candidates in the running for the Republican presidential nomination.

There are four debates and one candidate forum between now and Dec. 1. GOP candidates will debate on general topics Wednesday in Michgan and again Saturday in South Carolina After that, they’ll be grilled on specific themes. First, a forum on social conservative issues in Iowa; then, a debate on national security in D.C.; and finally, immigration is expected to be top of mind at the Dec. 1 debate in Arizona

Debating has been crucial for candidates in the volatile GOP primary so far. Texas Governor Rick Perry’s poor debate performances knocked him out of an early lead. Herman Cain vaulted to the top by using debates to connect with voters.

There are another 11 debates scheduled during the 2012 GOP primary. After November, it’s expected that some of the eight remaining hopefuls will begin to drop out of the race.
