Bobby Jealousy “Jealous Monday” Show Tonight at 29th St. Ballroom
Bobby Jealousy almost sounds like a soap opera character’s name. Or…perhaps a character out of some gritty pulp fiction mystery? Underground punk film? In this case, we’re talking about a quartet based here in Austin, and a band that’s rapidly becoming one of my favorites.
They tangle an audacious, edgy blend of lots of good stuff: Rock, pop, equal parts indie and punk, and these ridiculously sweet vocals and harmonies that add the right touch of drama. Not sweet as in sappy, but sweet as in doing so in awesome ways that work. And speaking of drama, Bobby Jealousy is most captivating in a brazen, unorthodox way because – and I’ve mentioned the twisted humor before – nothing says “funny” like songs about the skyrocketing highs and miserable lows of relationship drama. There’s something irresistible about a band that takes on the subject matter of relationships and puts it to you tongue-in-cheek. Life is short. Time to laugh.
While they’re still relatively new to the local music scene, Bobby Jealousy has been picking up momentum with shows around town. You’ll have a chance to see them at a signature “Jealous Monday” show tonight at the 29th St. Ballroom, located at 2906 Fruth, next door to Spiderhouse Coffee. The Bell Riots and Shivery Shakes are also on the bill. The music starts at 10 p.m. Superb way to banish the Monday blahs. Recommended.
