Around Town: Fun Fun Fun Fest
Erin Randall/KUTOn November 5th and 6th, Storyboard went to the 6th annual Fun Fun Fun Fest at their new location at Auditorium Shores. Transmission Entertainment (the exclusive booking and production partner for the festival) put together an exciting lineup of music acts covering everything from hip hop and punk/hardcore to indie rock and comedy. Many of the acts at Fun Fun Fun are bands you’re likely to see at Transmission’s home base venue, The Mohawk, or perhaps at another club on Red River. But at Fun Fun Fun you get to see them all at once, in a jam-packed three day weekend, complete with great food, live wrestling, a skate ramp, and what else…a mechanical bull.
Beyond the obvious f-f-f-funess, what makes this festival so exciting is the point of view the booking reflects. Transmission says it best themselves on their website “…filling stages with what is bubbling from the underground, what sounds great, and what is making an impact, regardless of what Pollstar or the mainstream media said was cool.”
Clearly, as this festival has gotten bigger, the support of corporate sponsorship is required, but many of the people we spoke with said the choices in booking, vendors, and attitude has a distinct homegrown feel that sets it apart from other local music festivals. It’s clear that Transmission Entertainment is becoming one of the forces in shaping and re-defining what sounds make Austin the Live Music Capital to the rest of the world.
