Part of the allure of a great song can be its ability to embody the emotions of a very specific time – even a tumultuous time when the feelings surrounding it weren’t so great. And even then, the song itself isn’t restricted to this mournful, moping sound. It can be just as vibrant, melodic, playful or catchy as the happiest pop song on the planet. Wild Child achieves this with perfection, and takes it up a few notches.
The indie folk sextet’s core members, songwriters Kelsey Wilson and Alexander Beggins, are the main voices on Wild Child’s latest album, Pillow Talk (the two met on the road while playing with a Scandinavian band, and wrote their first ten songs in a tour van). They are sweetly melodic in their vocal exchanges while they take on the subject matter of relationships gone awry, without sugar-coating the painful admissions or resorting to nostalgia.
It’s heartbreaking but by no means sad, and it doesn’t overshadow the band’s amazing chemistry. You have talented musicians like cellist Sadie Wolfe, keyboardist Evan Magers, multi-instrumentalist Matthew Mares and drummer Carey McGraw contributing incredible riffs and arrangements to each remarkable track. This is the perfect marriage of pop and folk, and is, by far, one of the best albums to be released this year.
Be sure to catch Wild Child at their CD release show tonight at The Parish, 214 E. 6th St. The show will also feature sets by Agent Ribbons, Little Lo and Shakey Graves. The music starts around 9 p.m. Recommended.
