Portland-based husband and wife duo Viva Voce released their eighth album, The Future Will Destroy You, this past summer. The title, and some of the tracks, seem to have a foreboding air to them, but despite the apocalyptic vibes, it’s not all gloom and doom invading the music. The overall tone is hopeful, defiant in the face of all the negative things going on in the world. Kind of heavy? Of course, and it’s a great album.

Kevin and Anita Robinson, who also play with their band Blue Giant (Bobby Bare, Jr.‘s backing band), usually lean more toward the psychedelic side of rock, at times heavy on the doses of reverb. This time around, there’s something more in the style that might remind you of early country tunes and pop. The vocals are what make this duo really stand out. It’s this smooth and beautiful interplay of traded harmonies that give an added richness to the duo’s sound.

Don’t miss out on Viva Voce’s show tonight at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, on the indoor stage. Also on the bill are Portland folk-rockers The Parson Redheads and local slop-punk/fun-rock non-behavers The Midgetmen. Doors open at 9 p.m. Recommended.
