In 2009, musicians Mario Matteoli and Cayce Marsh were still performing and touring as a duo, but they decided it was time for a big change. Make that, a bigger band. That was the beginning of “Cosmic-American” outfit The Preservation.
Drummer Josh Wienholt and bassist Ben Burdick, who had previously played with a friend of Matteoli’s, joined the group, and Wienholt convinced keyboardist Andy Bianculli to come out to Austin by way of Baltimore. Everyone was searching for something bigger, something better musically. They recorded a demo that winter, embarked upon a 12-week tour the following summer, and recorded their debut full-length by the following fall.
The term “Cosmic” embraces just about anything, and in this case it does refer to the diversity of the bands’ background and everything they bring to the table. Just give a listen to their new album, Two Sisters: This time, the band merges indie and folk with plenty of pop grooves, a little bit of psych and just a touch of country. Very groovy indeed.
Don’t miss out on The Preservation’s CD release show tonight at the Swan Dive, 651 Red River. The bill includes performances by two other great local bands, Leatherbag and Wiretree. A perfect triple bill for Friday night, and I, your Austin Music Minute maven Laurie Gallardo, will be hosting the show. Be sure to get there by 9 p.m.; the music starts at 9:30. Recommended.
