A lot of amazing songwriting has come from local band The Lovely Sparrows, and there’s a lot more music to be shared in the near future on some new EPs. During a casual interview last week at Woodland on S. Congress, Sparrows frontman Shawn Jones gave KUT the latest scoop on the soon-to-be released EP, Tall Cedars of Lebanon.

With tongue in cheek and a sly grin, Jones spared no details. “This is my most brutal, satanic album yet, full of dark wizardry” he wryly intoned, shades of Adult Swim show Metalocalypse pervading the inside joke.

All right. So it’s not really going to be a metal EP, and chances are, The Lovely Sparrows have no intention of turning into a metal band anytime soon. But they’ve certainly gone through their own metamorphosis since their inception in 2005, from indie rock electric guitar shredding (their first 7-inch vinyl release Take Your Hats Off You Godless Bastards) to forays into quieter indie-folk solo acoustic performances (2006′s Pulling Up Floors, Pouring On {New} Paint), leading up to their most ambitious and multi-faceted pop venture, Bury the Cynics (2008). Jones has built an impressive collection of songs inhabited by haunting but beautiful images – lost love somehow frustratingly just within reach, but never really attainable.

Over the years, The Lovely Sparrows have performed with up to seven members at a time, but are currently playing as a quartet. They’d been working on a full-length album when Jones was inspired to release their new music on individual EPs, rather than one full-length. Tall Cedars of Lebanon will be the first of these, dropping November 8th.
