On this edition of In Black America, producer/host John L. Hanson Jr. speaks with Deana Y. Smith, Director of Player Security Services for the National Football League. As director of the NFL’s Player Security Services, her primary responsibility is to serve as a liaison between the NFL and its players. In her role, she coordinates and implements educational security based information and programs to ensure players safety off the field. Smith is the only African-American woman in her field.
Before Smith joined the NFL in 2008, she worked for nearly a decade at the National Collegiate Athletic Association. There, she worked as an Enforcement Services Agent in the Gambling and Amateurism Activities department, where she investigated allegations of NCAA rules violations involving gambling, sports agents and amateur status. Also, she provided educational presentations on these matters to a range of organizations, including member schools and universities, student-athletes, professional sports organizations, players associations and conference attendees.
