HAAM Benefit Day 2012
KUT Multimedia producer Jorge Sanhueza-Lyon profiles HAAM Benefit Day 2012

HAAM/Whole Foods

HAAM provides both treatment and prevention healthcare services to musicians.  Karen Esquivel is a HAAM client, an Austin musician, and an opera singer.  KUT visits with her here while she has an appointment with Shanna Barry, Family Nurse Practitioner at the Seton McCarthy Community Health Center.  Carolyn Schwarz, Executive Director of HAAM, talks about how HAAM has impacted local musicians, and expanded its services, including a partnership with Whole Foods Market.  Whole Foods provide nutrition workshops to HAAM clients, and Dan Mareck, Whole Foods Healthy Eating Specialist, tells us more about healthy eating on budget and  importance of musicians to have healthy options.

SIMS

Dr. Gilbert Ramos, local psychotherapist and a SIMS Foundation provider, expresses the importance of having SIMS in Austin, and how SIMS, by helping musicians, helps make Austin the rich community that it is.  Tricia Forbes, Executive Director of SIMS, talks about how SIMS operates, providing counseling, medication management, and addiction recovery services to musicians, their partners, and their families.  She and Lila Johnson, Outreach Director of SIMS, both note the need to combat the myth that that musicians necessarily have to be “tortured creatives” to be successful.  Because of SIMS, musicians in Austin do not have to deal with mental health and addiction issues alone.

HAAM Hearing

Among HAAM’s services to local musicians are the HEAR Project clinics.  Each HAAM musician is able to acquire a single pair custom-made earplugs at reduced rates.  Dr. Soriya Estes, audiologist and owner of Estes Audiology, discusses the screening process for musicians at the clinic.  KUT walks through the process here with Dennis Thomas, who is getting his very first pair of custom-made earplugs; while another local musician, Dylan Goodhue, who clearly values these services, tells us why.  Rob Fedson, Director of Education at MediaTech Institute, which provides space for the clinic, tells us the importance of musicians and engineers protecting a major part of their instrument, their ears.
