As you may have figured, I, your Austin Music Minute hostess with-the-mostess Laurie Gallardo, like to stay on top of local music by checking out as many shows as possible and surfing the interwebs to see what bands and songwriters are up to. Many times, purely by chance, something catches my ear completely by accident. In the case of Bobby Jealousy, though, it was something else that first got my attention: Their wicked sense of humor.
I was struck by a few lines from the Austin quartet that had me grinning: “One minute, you’re cock of the walk. The next, you’re a feather duster,” and “We were born with lightning in our eyes…” They conjure a solid blend of indie-pop, power pop, rock ‘n’ roll, and some rather punk-inspired moments paired with animated delivery, disjointed poetry, and a delightfully twisted humor. There’s something irresistible about a band that takes on subject matter like relationship drama and puts it to you tongue-in-cheek with awesome vocals to boot.
Bobby Jealousy is still pretty new to the local scene, but they’ve been playing around town and working on new tracks for an upcoming album. Be sure to see them play tonight at The Frontier Bar, located at 2421 Webberville Rd. in East Austin. This is going to be a great show – they’re sharing the bill with mega-pop quartet Wiretree and bubblegum glitter punkestra Lola-Cola. Doors open at 9 p.m. A perfect night of all-local music. Recommended.
