Yellow Ostrich’s Alex Schaaf is a graduate of Lawrence University, where he studied in the Wisconsin school’s prestigious music conservatory. He takes a scholarly approach to his own music, which appears on the recently-released third album by Yellow Ostrich, The Mistress. The songs are carefully composed, often built around dozens of loops that Schaaf creates with his own voice. He has half a dozen releases to his name, all restlessly creative and complex.

But recently Yellow Ostrich has taken flight and moved to New York, and Schaaf has turned the project into a full-band effort. The Mistress has two different versions of “Mary”–one featuring Schaaf on his own, and another that boasts bandmates Michael Tapper and Jon Natchez. The trio really make this alternate version of “Mary” shine, and today it’s our song of the day.

You can also check out Yellow Ostrich at this weekend’s ACL Fest, where they will be performing Sunday on the Google Plus stage at 11:45 AM.
