Usually, electronic acts don’t lend themselves well to stripped-down sets, but Twin Shadow is not your standard electronic act. It’s the project for George Lewis, Jr., a musician who’s traced his routes from the Dominican Republic to Brooklyn and everywhere in between. He’s a songwriter first and foremost, and that became readily apparent when he stopped by KUT’s tent backstage at ACL Fest this past weekend.
His debut album, Forget, earned rave reviews last year for its mixture of dance elements and personal subject matter. Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor produced the effort, adding a clean sound to an album that’s built on simplicity. Lewis’s songs boast minimal beats and synthesizers, sounding much more intimate than the ’80s New Wave acts he’s influenced by.
On Forget, “Slow” is a standout track, punctuated by a driving rhythm and dark undercurrents. But today’s song of the day, which was caught live backstage at ACL, features Lewis with just his shimmering guitar and lonely baritone. Even with all the spectacle going down at Zilker Park, this subtle performance was easily one of the highlights of the entire Fest.
