This Week in Texas Music History, we’ll honor a man who helped establish the first Baptist music school in Texas.

Ike Reynolds was born September 27, 1879, in Shades Valley, Alabama. In 1915, he moved to Fort Worth to head up the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s new music department, which was the state’s first Baptist school of music. As director, Reynolds taught classes, supervised student groups, and organized the department’s first annual Christmas performance of Handel’s Messiah.

Ike Reynolds continued to teach at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary until 1945. He also composed and performed a variety of hymns, anthems, and dramatic presentations up until his death in 1949.
