Psychedelia roots outfit The Ripe first got together in 2007. After a few line-up changes, the band has whittled down to a tight trio featuring the talents of guitarist Jake Garcia and bassist Gian Ortiz sharing vocals, and one of the best drummers in town Nick Yaklin.
While they clearly have a great admiration for their favorite bands from years past – think Big Star, The Nerves, The Troggs, The Kinks – they’re continuously inspired by their contemporaries in the rock and indie veins, embracing the best of both worlds. They churn out hooks and melodies that reflect late-60s psych and power pop influences, some folk, maybe even a little early garage rock. But to get right to the point: This great rock ‘n’ roll. These videos of The Ripe performing live, produced by Austin Music Weekly, should give you a good idea.
The Ripe is preparing for their very first tour – overseas, no less, through Spain and Italy. They’ve planned a special bon voyage show for Thursday night at The Frontier Bar, at 2421 Webberville Rd. in East Austin. The Bellfuries will be making an appearance, along with Fast Luke & The Lead Heavy. Doors open at 9 p.m. Recommended.
