The Preservation is a quintet based here in Austin with members whose musical roots as diverse as the city they’re based in. It all started in 2009, when founder Mario Matteoli (formerly of The Weary Boys) and wife, percussionist Cayce Marsh, decided to form a new band after touring as a duo.
Drummer Josh Wienholt and bassist Ben Burdick, who had previously played with a friend of Matteoli’s, joined the group, and Wienholt convinced keyboardist Andy Bianculli to come out to Austin by way of Baltimore. Everyone was searching for something bigger, something better musically. They recorded a demo that winter, embarked upon a 12-week tour the following summer, and recorded their debut full-length by that fall.
They create what they like to call “Cosmic American music.” And there definitely is a cosmic vibe coming from it, with elements of psychedelic rock, country, the blues… It calls to mind that pairing of hippie and redneck styles from the late ‘60s/early ‘70s.
Be sure to catch The Preservation tonight at The Continental Club, 1315 S. Congress Ave. There’s another great band opening the show, Austin six-piece roots masters Deadman. Two fantastic bands you need to check out. The music starts at 10 p.m. Recommended.
