After multiple albums and seventeen years of touring The Gourds have pretty much got it down to a science. But in the past, that science was largely based on a DIY method. This go-around the Austin-based five-piece decided to do things a little differently. They signed on with indie label, Vanguard Records and made their way up north to the historic Levon Helm Studios otherwise known as ‘The Barn’.
Producer Larry Campbell, affectionately known as ‘Coach’ by front man Kevin (Shinyribs) Russell, was the key that made the whole operation work. He pushed each member to their full potential, says bassist Jimmy Smith. “With this one we had someone to expedite our talent. He got our attention.”
What The Gourds emerged with is the career changing record, Old Mad Joy. The record release date isn’t until September 13, but The Gourds recently stopped by KUT’s Studio 1a for a live performance, which you can listen to RIGHT HERE!
