In describing the expansive black (Sabbath-like) magic of Sleepy Sun, I couldn’t resist paraphrasing a little line made famous by Bogey: This is the stuff that dream jams are made of.
The San Francisco-based band is on one major, heavy trip via killer riffs and spacey male/female vocal waltzes. Their 2010 release Fever brings this thunderous presence to the threshold in majestic, hypnotic waves teetering between psych rock and prog rock. It’s like epic throne-of-the-gods-type of rock, really; the droned-out, psyched-out Twilight Zone-y edge of the universe just stopping short of dipping off into heavy metal.
You can see Sleepy Sun play tonight at Emo’s, 603 Red River, sharing the bill with Austin psych and rock brethren Smoke and Feathers and St. James Society. Doors open at 9 p.m. Highly recommended.
