Despite being such a seemingly antiquated genre, folk music’s banner is being taken up wholesale by a number of Austin bands. We’ve been keeping our ears perked to Hello Wheels since the release of their debut EP Baby John The Fox earlier this summer.
Self-described as a “stomp-folk band,” the group is barely into their second year, but they’ve already nailed down complex, multi-part harmonies. Banjo and acoustic guitar lead the melodic charge, but upright bass and percussion drive the sound forward. Baby John is a varied debut, featuring the dirge-like “Gone Away,” the golden country-folk of “Interlude,” and the dreamy “Summer Song.” Recently Hello Wheels recorded a brand new song for KUT to celebrate their September residency at the Cactus Cafe, which is wrapping up tomorrow night with one last performance.
Today’s song of the day is called “Summer’s In The Sun,” and it throws a few other ingredients into the mix. Trumpets and cellos work alongside the bluesy melody, proving that these locals have a few more tricks up their sleeves. Be sure to sing along with Hello Wheels at the Cactus Cafe tomorrow night starting at 8 PM.
