Our Story
Komen’s presence in Austin began in 1997 with a Race for the Cure ® and was incorporated as an Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® in 1999. The Komen Austin Affiliate serves LOCAL communities by providing funding for life-saving breast cancer programs which provide education, screening and medical treatment for women and men who otherwise could not afford it and international research for the cures.
Our Work
Ensuring quality care for all. energizing science to find the cures.
- We believe that to eliminate breast cancer forever, we must not only invest in research for future generations, but also help meet breast health needs of women and families facing the disease today.
- 75 percent of the proceeds stay in Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson Counties to fund programs that deliver screening, education, and treatment.
- 25 percent of the proceeds fund research for the cures. Next to the United States government, Komen is the largest private funder of breast cancer research in the world.
Our Impact
Since 1999, the Komen Austin Affiliate has provided more than $10.5 million in funding to LOCAL community clinics, hospitals and health care organizations for breast screening, diagnosis and treatment, and research for the cures. We also serve as an educational resource to the organizations and companies in our service area.
The Promise
To save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.
That is what Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen. In 1982, Susan G. Komen for the Cure ® launched the global breast cancer movement through patient advocacy, building awareness and rasing funds for research and community outreach programs. Komen is the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting to end breast cancer forever.
