It was time to make some changes…

Vocalist Steve Collins was searching for another direction in his songwriting, so in 1999 he formed Deadman. It quickly went from a quartet to a six-piece outfit, with guitarist Kevin McCollough, lead guitarist Jacob Hildebrand, Matthew Mollica on the Hammond 0rgan and accordion, bassist Lonnie Trevino, Jr. and drummer Kyle Schneider.

The band immerses itself in rich roots, gospel, blues, country and Southern folk styles that move within the realm of their musical predecessors like The Band, Van Morrison, or maybe a little like Dylan and Springsteen. And there’s something unmistakably spiritual about their sound. Collins carries consistent universal themes throughout these songs of life and death: You’ve got love, loss, longing, perhaps redemption or retribution, and on that distant horizon, a glimmer of hope.

This band is really growing on me, kids. Check out Deadman tonight at The Continental Club, 1315 S. Congress. The music starts at 10 p.m. They’ll be followed by songwriter James Bullard at midnight. Recommended.
