Let’s get one thing out of the way: Cowboy and Indian isn’t a vanity project. Jesse Plemons (who played Landry on Friday Night Lights) is a legitimate guitarist and songwriter. Plemons and former T-Bird and the Breaks member Jazz Mills join Daniel James to make up the core of this Austin band who, despite having only two recorded singles to date, are garnering buzz from critics and fans nationwide.

Peter Mongillo of the Austin American-Statesman admits that the band’s “sound” is difficult to pin down. Their two singles range from traditional blues to old-school country and western swing, with a bit of Ryan Adams mixed in for good measure. The members got together just after SXSW this year to record material for a debut release which should hit shelves either later this year or early next year. In fact, according to Mongillo, the band has recorded enough material for a couple of albums.

Cowboy and Indian have been touring pretty consistently since SXSW, but will be returning to Austin in time for this year’s Austin City Limits Music Festival (the weekend of September 16-18). “Trouble Tracks” has been featured on the TV show Parenthood, but this version of the tune was recorded when the band broke from touring this summer, and band dropped by KUT’s Studio 1A to perform some of the new tunes live on the radio.
