North Carolina’s Annuals have been crafting their expansive sound for only a few short years, but their youth is perhaps their greatest asset. Chief songwriter and vocalist Adam Baker attacks the challenge of song craft, seeming to ignore conventional wisdom. The group is constantly writing and recording, releasing a new batch of songs seemingly every year.
But that work ethic keeps the ideas fresh and energetic. Baker sings at the top of his lungs, and the band follows suit, bashing away at electric and acoustic instruments with equal fervor.
Last year saw the release of two EPs, Sweet Sister and Count The Rings, but it was 2008′s rousing full-length Such Fun that put Annuals on the map. Today’s song of the day is “Down The Mountain,” which appears on Such Fun as a danceable pop tune. But this version is one the band recorded live at KUT’s Studio 1A in 2009 in a stripped-down, emotional tone.
