As legend has it (depending on whom you ask, or whoever is telling the story), Austin quintet Whiskey Shivers formed around 2009. Some say they were hatched in a woodpile. Others say they tumbled out of one-a them rancid whiskey bottles and frightened the locals. But mostly, it was a talented bunch of musicians who figured they’d make great music together. And maybe frighten the locals at the same time.

This is what you could refer to as hardcore roots – traditional country with a bit of Appalachian mountain music executed on punk rock jet fuel. This practically guarantees a dance party at their live performances with some of the wildest fiddle-playing around. Put in plenty of banjo-picking, harmonica, upright bass, and some washboard, and you’ve got one high-octane performance. It’s a mix of down-home and down ‘n’ dirty.

Before heading out on tour for parts in North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee, Whiskey Shivers’ are having their CD release show Tuesday night at the Scoot Inn, 1308 E. 4th St. at Navasota. They’ll be joined by The Baker Family and a band that’s starting a September residency at the Cactus Cafe, Hello Wheels. Get there at 9 p.m., and be ready to dance the night away. Recommended.
