The fine folks of Sky Candy have been teaching trapeze and other circus arts to Austinites for the past year or so. And when they’re not teaching class, they spend their time creating original aerial art. That’s culminated in The Red Shoes, an original, full-length aerial ballet based on the  story by Hans Christian Andersen. Originally staged in May of this year, The Red Shoes is coming back for one weekend, with a few new cast members and some new routines added as well.

Creator and choreographer Chelsea Laumen has always liked the story and its assorted previous adaptations, and feels the darkness of the story is a good fit with the odd, “punk rock” vibe of the circus arts. It’ll make full use of the skills in the Sky Candy repertoire, featuring trapeze, silks, lyra, ropes, and even some chains, not to mention the shadow puppets and stilt work. We recently talked with Chelsea and fellow Sky Candy co-founder Winnie Hsia about the show and also caught a bit of the show rehearsal on video below.
