In 2008, Austin quartet the Calm Blue Sea released their self-titled debut, but a brief hiatus hampered the band’s profile. So the group decided to release it again–and not surprisingly, it’s turning more heads this time.

The Calm Blue Sea are cut from the same cloth as fellow Austinites Explosions in the Sky: quiet-loud dynamics, long instrumentals, and heady subject matter. But don’t let the similarities fool you. The band is exceptionally good at what it does, providing soaring hooks that continually build momentum until a final crashing conclusion. Their notable live shows made them one of the breakout local acts from this past SXSW, and many national outlets are singing their praises the second time around. Their self-title debut was just re-released with remixes of all the original tracks plus a few bonus cuts thrown in.

The group stopped by KUT’s Studio 1A for a live session, and our superb engineers did a fine job capturing the wildness of the band’s live sound. Today’s song of the day is “The Rivers That Run Beneath This City,” by the Calm Blue Sea.
