After he heard a harp melody floating through his apartment wall, Brad Barr learned it, knocked on the door of his neighbor Sarah Page, and played it for her on guitar. A few months later, Barr recruited his brother Andrew and bassist Miles Perkin to round out the Montreal quartet the Barr Brothers. That bold beginning has led to a bold debut album, due on September 27.

The Barr Brothers is an eclectic mix of sounds and styles, with Brad Barr writing most of the songs and including input from all of the members of the band. The group shares a love of folk music, but they also cover Blind Willie Johnson’s harrowing blues ballad “Lord, I Just Can’t Keep From Crying.” Throughout, Page stretches her harp by putting it through distortion pedals and other effects, and the band continually pushes themselves for new sounds and new ideas.

“Beggar In The Morning” leads off the album by introducing the listener to their progressive folk sound. Bubbling electronics color the edges, but Brad Barr’s rich lyrics steal the show. Take a listen to the song below.
