5. Jimmie Vaughan, Plays More Blues, Ballads & Favorites
Jimmie Vaughan Plays More Blues, Ballads & Favorites in the number five spot this week. More is a follow up to last year’s Grammy nominated Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites. Long time pal Lou Ann Barton joins Vaughan on the cover of the new release. The two locals will play Hardtails Bar and Grill in Georgetown this Thursday, August 20th.
4. Black Red Black, Black Red Black
Local jazz outfit Black Red Black features heavy-hitters Ephraim Owens, Red Young and Brannen Temple. Their self-titled debut features six tracks recorded live at Lamberts in downtown Austin. You can catch these jazz superstars every Wednesday at The Highball.
3. Sarah Jarosz, Follow Me Down
As Sarah Jarosz wraps up her summer tour and heads back to school at the New England Conservatory, her sophomore album, Follow Me Down, continues to gain fans. Her music has caught on with audiences across the age spectrum. Jarosz may be young, but her tastes in music are not confined to her generation or any other. That much is evident through the songs she chose to cover on this album: one by Bob Dylan and another by Radiohead.
2. Bob Schneider, A Perfect Day
Bob Schneider’s 15th solo album, A Perfect Day, is in the number two position this week. Schneider, a local favorite, has won 24 Austin Music Awards, not including those awarded to his various other bands. He is set to play the 7th Annual Austin Batfest Friday, August 27th.
1. Gary Clark Jr., Bright Lights
Making his debut at number one on our list is Gary Clark Jr. with his latest release, Bright Lights. Clark Jr., 27, grew up honing his skills in Austin blues church Antone’s. He counts Nirvana, Howlin’ Wolf, Tupac and fellow ACL performer Stevie Wonder among his influences, and you can hear each one in his distorted blues-rock. This four song EP shows that Gary Clark Jr. is one to watch.
You can start your watchin’ right here with this “Bright Lights EP Trailer”.
