During the day, Nikki Lane works as a fashion model, but by night, she’s a bonafide country singer. Her debut EP Gone Gone Gone shows off a young singer who’s looking to turn Nashville on its head.
Lane grew up in Greenville, South Carolina but left as a bright-eyed teenager for Los Angeles. After a few years of dead-end jobs, she moved to New York but still couldn’t find her way. But it was in New York that Lane first started to seriously write songs, and an album’s worth of material came pouring out. Another move took her to Nashville to record an EP with Lewis Pesacov, member of the L.A. outfit Fool’s Gold and producer of last year’s Crazy For You by Best Coast.
That restless, moving quality is readily apparent in Lane’s music. The title track from her EP is a fiery blast of country-rock that shows off Lane’s rough voice. It’s a nod back to icons like Loretta Lynn and Wanda Jackson, but it also has a more modern touch of tension and darkness.
Nikki Lane will be performing at Poodie’s Hilltop Roadhouse in Austin on August 21, but in the meantime, take a listen to “Gone Gone Gone” below.
