Once again, I, your Austin Music Minute maven Laurie Gallardo, feel obliged to tell you about another electrifying band you need to see live and that will put you in non-stop dancing mode. I also need to add that this is not your parents’ reggae.

Houston outfit Los Skarnales has been playing since 1994, after founding members Felipe Galvan and Jose Rodriguez brought together a new group of budding musicians after their punk band Desorden broke up. These days, Los Skarnales is eight-members strong, including a massive horn section that blows you away at the first listen. They’ve toured extensively through the U.S. and Mexico, sharing bills with Ozomatli and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs.

They’ve got the winning formula:  A mix of ska and reggae with Latin sounds:  Cumbia, mambo, and danzones . They toss in some rockabilly and swing, then serve it up with a punk rock attitude.

Check out Los Skarnales when they play Friday night at Flamingo Cantina, 515 E. 6th St. And the bill is most impressive:  Danzonera Distortion and San Antonio group Los de Esta Noche. ¡Que fantastico! Get there at about 10 p.m. Recommended.
