It’s a bit difficult, but I – your Austin Music Minute hostess Laurie Gallardo – do my best to avoid using the description “singer-songwriter” when talking about solo artists. Some local musicians don’t mind it; others, not so much (some absolutely cringe and hiss…ask me how I know, I learned the hard way – kisses to you, Mr. Coleman). But you do have to admit that the face of Austin music has evolved to include so much more than just one type of Texas-style genre. The term “songwriter” covers much more ground these days, even if it still might conjure up a specific image that doesn’t apply to all performers.
So, with that in mind, and with the help of the wonderful James Taylor of Giant Steps Productions, I assembled a mini-showcase to shine the spotlight on up-and-coming artists who are part of Austin’s ever-evolving creative atmosphere. Taylor gracious dubbed this acoustic show Laurie Gallardo Presents: A Songwriter’s Showcase at Thunderbird Coffee, and the line-up is most impressive – Chris Catalena, Jesse Moore (East Cameron Folkcore), Austin Kalman (LIONS, Trashy Charmer), Jaimee Harris, Chris Brecht and Ross Dubois.
Don’t miss out! Join us tonight at 8 p.m. at Thunderbird, 2200 Manor Rd. And be sure to check KUT’s website for next week’s premiere of a great new video series that will profile local music artists featured on the Austin Music Minute, hosted by yours truly, and filmed and directed by Richard Whymark (API Productions). Very exciting indeed – pretty much what AMM would look like from a visual standpoint. Our first profile will be of one of our musicians playing the show tonight, Austin Kalman.
Cheers to one and all for your participation and support. See you tonight.
