There was no turning back for Jon Christopher once he learned how to play guitar at 14. Even then, he knew what his priorities were.

These days, Christopher is a mortgage banker by profession. Not necessarily an easy job – more like a career thing for most people, but that doesn’t keep him from being completely dedicated to his music. He’s got two albums, Heavy and Only Human, and his new self-titled release to prove it.

Christopher is the sort of musician who’s inspired by artists as diverse as Cat Stevens, Kings of Leon or Arcade Fire, then works that inspiration into a melding of R&B, blues and rock sounds, the kind of genre-bending you find throughout the entire new album

Christopher is based in Austin but spends his time between here and New York City playing shows. You’ll have the chance to see him perform at his CD release show Thursday night at the Cactus Cafe, located at 24th St. and Guadalupe in the Texas Union building at UT. Indie-roots artist Gina Chavez is perfect for starting out the evening. Doors open at 8 p.m., so get there around then to catch the entire show.

If you miss Jon Christopher then, you can see him play Saturday night at The Gypsy Lounge, 1504 E. 6th St. Two chances. Don’t miss out.
