Jolie Holland seemed destined to write songs from an early age. Her great uncle played with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys and she says before she could walk, she was on somebody’s hip being two-stepped around the dance floor. She’s been writing songs since she was six, and joined her first band at sixteen – all without a proper music education. She relocated to Brooklyn from Houston years ago, but says said that she surrounds herself with Texas musicians wherever she ends up.
Holland released a new record in late June called Pint of Blood. Paste Magazine says that Holland wisely picks up where 2008′s The Living and the Dead left off: smoky vocals and understated production give heft to songs like album opener “All Those Girls” and mid-record standout “Little Birds.”
Holland visited KUT while in Austin touring in support of the new record. She played a couple of the new songs live, but the standout tune from the session was a cover of a Jimmie Dale Gilmore song from the seventies called “Tonight I Think I’m Gonna Go Downtown.”
