Steve Earle first tipped us to Joe Pug. A few years back, while recording his own Studio 1A session, Earle sung the praises of his opening act, a young, unknown singer-songwriter from Chicago. Since then, Pug has moved from the Windy City to Austin, and last year came his debut album Messenger. It certainly helps having a legend like Earle in your corner, but Pug has earned it. While he studied to be a playwright in college, Pug decided to pick up his guitar after graduation. Since 2008, he’s been honing his craft, learning from the likes of Joe Ely, M. Ward, and Earle while on a series of lengthy tours.

His move to Austin was prompted by his love of Texas singer-songwriters, and he’s already been welcomed into the company of such luminaries as Ray Wylie Hubbard and James McMurtry. Currently, Pug is touring behind an EP of songs recorded with tour mates Strand of Oaks, but he found some time to stop by Studio 1A.

Today’s song of the day comes from that live session. Here’s “How Good You Are,” by Joe Pug.
