Gov. Rick Perry is spending the week touring all the early primary states: Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Of course, Perry’s opponents in the Republican primary contest are looking for weaknesses to exploit.

Texas Congressman Ron Paul thinks he may have found one. In a conversation with KUT’s Nathan Bernier, Gardner Selby of the Austin American-Statesman’s PolitiFact Texas discusses how accurate Paul’s statements regarding Perry’s record have been.

One claim Selby and his team investigated: Paul’s statement that Perry “was the (campaign) chairman for Al Gore at one time, not too many years ago.” PolitiFact rated this “mostly true.”

After all, Perry did work for Gore’s presidential campaign as Texas state chairman—but that was in 1988, a year before Perry switched parties and joined Republicans in anticipation of running for agriculture commissioner.

“Two decades-plus is many years, especially in politics,” Selby says.
