The best aspect of Blitzen Trapper is their sheer sense of adventure. The Portland, Oregon quintet is nominally a country or folk band–there’s the requisite drawl from singer Eric Earley, pedal steel guitar, and golden harmonies. But that twang is accompanied by spacey-sounding keyboards, prog-rock guitar solos, and a hefty dose of experimental touches. Since their 2007 breakout, Wild Mountain Nation, each Blitzen Trapper album has been an exciting listen, even as the group has toned down some of their past eccentricities.
The group is notoriously prolific–American Goldwing, due September 13, is their sixth album in eight years. Earley does the majority of the songwriting, and the band actually recorded the new album a few weeks before going on tour for their previous album, last year’s Destroyer of the Void. First single “Love The Way You Walk Away” is classic Blitzen Trapper, a folk song that has its head in the clouds.
Earley has been praised by Rolling Stone, Spin, and NPR repeatedly for his original style of songwriting, and it’s easy to see why with today’s song of the day. Here’s “Love The Way You Walk Away,” by Blitzen Trapper.
