Austin Classical Guitar Society’s Classical Cactus Series Returns to Historic Cactus Cafe on August 11
AUSTIN, Texas—Aug. 2, 2011—The Austin Classical Guitar Society today announced the return of the popular Classical Cactus concert series at the storied Cactus Cafe on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin.
Classical Cactus features renowned local and regional classical guitar artists performing in the intimate surroundings of the Cactus, often regarded as the best live acoustic room in Austin and early home to performers such as Alison Krauss, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Lyle Lovett, Lucinda Williams and more.
“We are delighted to be back at the Cactus Cafe this fall, where we will bring together the unique, expressive qualities of classical guitar with iconic Austin surroundings,” said Austin Classical Guitar Society (ACGS) Executive Director, Dr. Matthew Hinsley. “The series we presented at the Cactus last spring was a tremendous hit and we know this will be another sensational series that allows our patrons to celebrate some of the best music Austin has to offer in extraordinary and intimate settings.”
Partnering with the Cactus Cafe and KUT 90.5, the ACGS’ Classical Cactus series will be presented on Thursday evenings in August, September, October and November. Performers scheduled for the series are Jonathan Dotson (9 p.m.) and Thales Smith (8 p.m.) on Aug. 11; Steve Kostelnik at 9 p.m., Sept. 8; the Gabriel Santiago Quintet on at 9 p.m., Oct. 20; and Juanito Pascual at 9 p.m., Nov. 10.

About Austin Classical Guitar Society
Austin Classical Guitar Society is the largest entity of its kind in the United States and is recognized as one of the leading guitar performance and education organizations in the world. Founded in 1990, the organization is now beginning its 22nd season and proudly features an International Concert Series (five major events) and a Summer Chamber Music Series (three major events) which featured such acclaimed artists as Pepe Romero, John Williams, Christopher Parkening, Eliot Fisk, and David Russell.
Through successful partnerships with artists, educators, Central Texas schools, and community organizations, Austin Classical Guitar Society has also established one of the most recognized and respected performing arts education programs in the country. Anchored by the Education Outreach Program that brings artists into classrooms and community workshops, the arts education projects help expose new audiences – young and old – to great music and the most celebrated performers of our time. In addition, the free ACGS Community Concert Series promotes active engagement with the performing arts, deepens the listening experience, and opens the arts to a wider, more diverse audience.
In June 2010, ACGS hosted the Guitar Foundation of America International Convention, comprised of more than 60 events during one week at Austin’s Long Center for the Performing Arts, including the world’s most prestigious classical guitar competition and powerful collaborations with Austin’s symphony, opera, chamber music center, and many more. The event was, by far, the largest event in Guitar Foundation of America history.
