Will Johnson doesn’t really like to talk about himself. He typically averts his eyes, slumps his shoulders and deflects the attention elsewhere. But there’s a lot for Johnson to talk about. He’s the frontman for at least a couple of bands (Denton stalwarts Centro-matic and South San Gabriel). Last year, he put together a brilliant one-off with Jason Molina (Magnolia Electric Co.) and he’s been working on a Woody Guthrie Tribute album over the last couple of years with Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt), Jim James (My Morning Jacket) and Anders Parker. Oh, and he plays drums in the super-group Monsters of Folk and paints folk-art-style portraits of classic baseball players (he’ll be showcasing a lot of his work in various shows over the next few months).
Johnson also writes and records songs on his own, and over the course of 48 hours in February, he got together with Jim Eno (the drummer for Spoon and local studio owner/producer) to record and mix an EP of new songs. “Little Raider” is the title track on the new collection of tunes, which you can pick up at live gigs and online. This version of the song was recorded at KUT earlier this month. Johnson and Centro-matic will be back in town supporting the Drive-by Truckers on September 1st at Stubb’s
