These days it’s hard to know when band names are trying to be sincere or ironic (lately you can bet on the latter). A lot of times, family-band names are for show alone. But that’s not the case with the Wheeler Brothers. Nolan, Patrick and Tyler Wheeler are Austin natives that grew up in the Lake Travis area, along with their steel guitar player A.J. Molyneaux. They met Danny Matthews while attending Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
Things are happening quickly for the band: they’ve made a name for themselves in Austin, selling out a CD release party at The Scoot Inn earlier this year. They’ve also become household names on the Louisiana scene and are currently on a US tour.
The Wheeler Brothers debut record Portraits was released last month on Ray Benson’s Bismeaux Records (Asleep At the Wheel, Texas Tornadoes, Carolyn Wonderland). The young band holds it’s own throughout the album, blending subtle folk with catchy rock numbers. The title track “Portraits” is the best of both worlds. Molyneaux’s steel guitar perfectly compliments Nolan Wheeler’s strong voice. The Brothers have put together a perfect summer record, and we’ll take it. Anything to keep your mind off the heat, right?
