Two distinctly different soul bands have emerged on the Austin music scene over the past few years. On the one hand, you have the blues-based, fire-and-brimstone blast of Black Joe Lewis railing against life’s many trials. Then there’s T-Bird & the Breaks, a band that just wants to have a good time and make sure you have one, too.
The Breaks’ just-released third album is appropriately goofy, from the title–Never Get Out Of This Funk Alive–to the eye-searing album cover. But as their many local fans can attest, the band’s members are serious about their craft. 2009 saw their gritty debut, Learn About It, earn rave reviews and a sizable following. And over the past year, the Breaks have been in and out of the studio writing and releasing a number of singles.
Never Get Out finds the band moving in an interesting new direction. As the title suggests, the group pushes their funk influence to the forefront, incorporating old-fashioned synths and even a vocoder into their sound. The result is their most stylistically diverse and original-sounding record to date, and a future world tour plans to bring T-Bird & the Breaks to as many ears as possible.
The group recently stopped by Studio 1A, and today’s song of the day comes from that live session. Here’s “Your Nasty Love,” by T-Bird & the Breaks.
