After listening to the dark, earthy tone of Matt Bauer’s recordings, you get a picture of where he got his start. Bauer grew up in rural Kentucky, and he relies heavily on the folk and bluegrass influences of the region. There is, however, an indie-tinge to his work that makes it sound contemporary (Bauer’s arrangements have been likened to Denton’s Midlake, especially their latest The Courage of Others. See also: Bon Iver, Horse Feathers).

Bauer now makes his home in New York, but concedes a semi-annual pilgrimage to Austin in March for SXSW. It was at SX a couple of years ago that he ran into local singer/songwriter Dana Falconberry (they were playing on the same bill, something like four hours apart). Their mutual admiration led to a collaboration in New York, a split 7”, and their current tour in support of Bauer’s new CD, The Jessamine County Book of the Living.

Waiting For Your Shadow” is one of the tunes Bauer and Falconberry recorded for the digital split-single. This version of the song was recorded at KUT just before an in-store at Waterloo Records.
