The name Gold Beach might conjure up the sounds of waves, seagulls, and surfing, but the Austin band digs deeper than any literal meaning. Their songs are complex constructions, rewarding repeat listens and closer scrutiny.
The group is made up of a handful of Austin music veterans. Singer/guitarist Michael Winningham and drummer Tony Daugherty cut their teeth with the Glass Family, and cellist Nicole Kern is a former member of Balmorhea. You can hear this experience in the band’s debut, Habibti, released earlier this year. It’s a dense collection of songs, twisting and turning between folk and cathartic pop, not unlike a homegrown Arcade Fire. The big sound requires each member to play multiple instruments, ranging from guitars and synths to toy pianos and castanets. It made for a crowded Studio 1A when the group recently stopped by. Today’s song of the day comes from that live session; here’s “Everyone I Know,” by Gold Beach.
