Coming into SXSW this year, we spoke with a handful of music nerds that kept mentioning a five-piece out of Lafayette, Louisiana that they were excited about checking out at the conference. The band was Givers, and, sure enough, they landed on Time Magazine‘s list of “Ten Acts That Rocked South By Southwest.” (KUT was lucky enough to host Givers at our SXSW showcase at Momo’s…they did, indeed, rock)

Givers are vocalist and percussionist Tiffany Lamson, vocalist and guitarist Taylor Guarisco, drummer and vocalist Kirby Campbell, bassist and guitarist Josh LeBlanc, and flautist, saxophonist, and keyboardist Nick Stephan. Lamson and Guarisco met in 2005, while enrolled at the University of New Orleans school of music. Hurricane Katrina drove them back to Lafayette and they began gigging in the college town.

Givers put out a DIY EP in 2009, but got a big break after signing to Glassnote in February of this year. The band enlisted Ben Allen (Deerhunter, Cee-Lo Green) to produce In Light, which hit record stores last month. The music is hard to pin down: it’s certainly indie-pop-based, but it has elements of Louisiana brass and zydeco mixed in. The band says their blend has a lot to do with their southern roots. “Being from the South, we have all learned how to slow down and appreciate life as it is here now – something that in most parts of the world is totally lost. All of this is directly reflected in every aspect of our music”

Atlantic” appears on In Light, but this version of the tune was performed live at KUT shortly after the record was released.
