Erin Ivey organized the Musical Kaleidoscope Project in 2009, bringing together visual artists and musicians to create art together at The Long Center. And thinking about what she wanted to accomplish musically for the project, she says she knew she needed a band that could improvise and bring light to some new tunes she had composed. Enter The Finest Kind: an independent band in its own right willing to back Erin up for the Long Center performance.
The Kaleidoscope gig went so well that Erin and the band decided to go into the studio to record an album. Broken Gold is what emerged.
In August, Erin takes up residency at Frank (4th and Colorado) and promises to bring along special guests. You can catch her on Tuesday nights throughout the month.
Erin dropped by KUT last week to perform some of the tunes that appear on Broken Gold, but one of the highlights of the session was a Hank Williams cover. “Lost Highway” is a highly recognizable tune, but Erin Ivey and the Finest Kind put their own unique spin on it.
