Brooklyn-based quartet Country Mice has sort of a deceptive moniker. It’s not so much country as it is psychedelic-garage and Southern rock. Not bad for some Midwestern guys who met up in New York. Front man Jason Rueger grew up on a Kansas farm, and discovered that his bandmates – guitarist Ben Bullington, drummer Kurt Kuehn and bassist Mike Feldman – also came from rural backgrounds.

Country Mice released their debut full-length album Twister back in May, and it slides into the country-pop realm here and there, but it’s ultimately very Southern rock ‘n’ roll – even punk – with Midwestern roots, of course. The vibe is similar to Neil Young’s Crazy Horse days, maybe around the time of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.

You can catch Country Mice at their show Friday night at Stubb’s indoor venue, 801 Red River. BOY will start the evening out. Keep in mind it’s a late show, following the Rock Raizer 3 fundraiser for the American Red Cross; doors will open at 11 p.m. Recommended.
