Now in its second year, Cinema East is threatening to become a new summertime Austin institution. Every other Sunday night during the summer months, crowds of independent movie fans make their way to the French Legation Museum at San Marcos and East Eight Street to catch an outdoor film screening and maybe a picnic. Cinema East specializes in the sorts of movies you’d usually have to attend a film festival to find; one week it’ll be a documentary, the next a low-budget comedy/drama. As programmed by Maggie Lea and Carlyn Hudson, Cinema East is something like an independent film festival stretched over every other Sunday night in the summer.

For each screening, a DJ is on hand to set the mood before the show starts, and Hope Farmers Market offers up locally-produced foodstuffs so that patrons can put together a picnic dinner to enjoy during the movie.

This Sunday night, July 24, they’re presenting Rainbows End, a comedic documentary about a group of East Texas musicians who take an adventurous road trip to California, hoping to hit the big time. A schedule of the remaining screenings for the summer can be found at the Cinema East website.
