Centro-Matic released their new album, Candidate Waltz, last month, and in certain ways, it was a bit of a surprise.
Bottom line: Will Johnson is a fantastic songwriter, so it’s not unreasonable to assume that Centro-Matic will have great music. At the same time, fans usually have a fair assessment of what to expect. Their style is a more sprawling, complex kind of indie folk that’s rather atmospheric. This time around, with Candidate Waltz you have something slightly more fast-paced, upbeat and very catchy – not the typical route, but just as impressive. They’re simple songs with great tempos. It’s brilliant and beautiful.
You can see Centro-Matic headline a show Sunday at the Mohawk, 912 Red River. This could easily fall into my favorite category – Superior Triple Bills. The line-up includes songwriter Sarah Jaffe, and an acoustic set by Shawn Jones and Lauryn Gould of The Lovely Sparrows. Get their early. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Do not miss this. Recommended.
