Bill Baird will accept compliments rather quietly. There might be a slightly uncomfortable shift in his frame, or a momentary glance away, but it doesn’t prevent someone like me (your Austin Music Minute host Laurie Gallardo) from offering compliments in the first place. So, there you have it. He’s a fantastic songwriter. They accolades are well-deserved.

The Austin-based composer has recorded a number of albums (and assorted cassettes – all with art design by Baird), as both solo artist and with his band {{{SUNSET}}}. Baird is in perpetual exploration, moving from minimalist pieces stripped down to the most bare chords, to explosive bursts and layers of melody and artfully constructed noise. Music is about the journey. It’s an ever-evolving entity in which he deftly flows with the constant change.

Baird is releasing a new limited edition LP, called Goodbye Vibrations, next month. Meanwhile, he’s making music with his latest project, Blank Fritz, and he’ll be doing a show with them tonight at what he has dubbed “Bro Fest 2011″ at Baby Blue Studios, located at 1522 E. 12th St. in East Austin. No, this will not be a kegger for the fist-pumping “bro” set; it’s more of a tongue-in-cheek tribute to some good friends he’s gathered to play the show: Two bands from California, Range of Flight Wilderness and Yesway, and Austin band Sleep Good.

The show starts around 10 p.m. Highly recommended.
