The lo-fi has not gone away, thankfully. Times New Viking remains fuzzed-up and loud – minus the tape hiss.
The Columbus, OH trio embraces the art of distorted vocals and heavily-echoed guitars in their noise pop. They used to resort to primitive methods of recording their music to great effect, like tracking to VHS. That changed when they signed to Merge Records and got themselves studio time for their album Dancer Equired. It was a move out of their comfort zone and into slicker production methods and slightly more quiet tones – but not too quiet. The sound remains as raw, gritty, and lo-fi as ever.
You can see Times New Viking play Tuesday night at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, on the indoor stage. Local artists Daniel Francis Doyle and The Sour Notes open the show. Doors open at 9 p.m.
