In 1984, Bernadette Nason took what seemed like a promising job — a one-year contract with an Italian oil company that would pay her enough to renovate her new home in England. The one catch: the job was in Tripoli, Libya. Once she began to (perhaps unwisely) research the country and its leader, Muammar Gaddafi, after signing her contract rather than before, Bernadette began to wonder if moving to Libya as a young, single English woman was her best life decision.
For the past 27 years, Bernadette’s stories of her time in Libya have entertained her fellow actors during downtime backstage, and from time to time she’s performed shorter versions of the tale onstage. Now, for the first time, she’s created a full-length version of her true-life adventure, which she’ll be performing this month at the City Theatre, under the direction of her friend Michael Stuart.
